The '''Woodward Iron Company''' operated mines, quarries and furnaces that were connected by a private industrial railroad in [[Jefferson County]]. The three ore mines were [[Woodward Mine #1]], [[Woodward Mine #2|#2]] and [[Woodward Mine #3|#3]].  Mine #1 was located south of [[Paul’s Hill]] in [[Bessemer]] and was the site of the administrative offices, doctor’s office and commissary. Mine #2 was south of [[Lipscomb]] and west of [[TCI Mine #7]].  Mine #3, also south of Lipscomb, was the last operational site on [[Red Mountain]] and closed about [[1953]]. The tipple was located at the #3 Mine on Red Mountain. There was a tailings dump on the south side of the mountain, at the end of track at Woodward #1 site.

The [[Woodward Line]] was an industrial track operated by Woodward ran on the "north" face of Red Mountain. The line came up the mountain, crossed under the [[TCI Railroad]], and had an interchange track with it.  Then the Woodward line, using a switchback configuration, worked along the face of Red Mountain to each of the three mine sites. To the west of this location, is the [[Sloss #2 Mine]] site, and to the east is the [[TCI]]/[[USX]] [[Wenonah #7 Mine]] site and head of the [[High Line]].

The Woodward Iron Company was one of the nation's largest suppliers of pig iron, employing more than 2,000 workers in the 1920s. The company operated mines, quarries and furnaces in western Jefferson County, all connected by a private industrial railroad. The company was founded on December 31, 1881 by brothers Joseph and William Woodward. Much of the land developed by the company for mining and manufacturing had been purchased in 1869 as an investment by their father Stimson Woodward, owner of the La Belle Iron Co. in Wheeling, West Virginia.

A headquarters office was located at the company's first ore mine at Tanyard Gap through Red Mountain in Bessemer. The community of Red Ore grew up around that facility, with a company-built infirmary, commissary and elementary school. The company developed two other ore mines, Woodward Mine No. 2 and Mine No. 3 south of Lipscomb and later operated the Songo Slope Mine two miles to the east and the Pyne Mine, a shaft mine drilled near Lacey's Chapel in Shades Valley in 1918.
