  • July 12: Smith Blevins, 49, died at Hillman Hospital from blunt-force injuries suffered during a burglary the previous night at the Howard Cleaning Company plant at 907 3rd Avenue North, where he was employed as watchman. Approximately $14,000 worth of jewelry and $600–$1999 in cash was stolen. Ed Mulvey, Ross Hicks, Russell Smith and Roy Scott were charged with murder, burglary and grand larceny. Scott signed a confession in which he claimed to have waited in a getaway car when the others entered the building. At trial he recanted his confession, which he claimed was made under duress. He was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 15 years at Kilby Prison. The other three suspects were not prosecuted as Scott's statements could not be admitted as evidence. Scott escaped in 1941 and was shot to death himself while attempting to rob a night watchman in Moundville on December 31 of that year. (report)
