Lake View (incorporated in February 1998 as Lakeview) is a town in eastern Tuscaloosa County, extending into Jefferson County. The 2020 U.S. Census recorded the town's population as 3,560.

History

Founded as Lakeview, the town split its name into two parts in 2000 to comply with the requirements of the Alabama League of Municipalities, which already recognized a town of Lakeview in DeKalb County. Prior to incorporating, mailing addresses in the community were assigned to McCalla.

A statewide referendum on the 2022 general election ballot granted the Alabama Public Service Commission the authority to regulate privately-owned sewage systems in the municipality.

The Interstate 20 bridge at Exit 100 to Lake View was named the "Bradley Johnson Memorial Bridge" in honor of Lake View native Bradley Johnson who was killed in the line of duty while serving as a Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy.

Government

Since 2017 the 5-member Lake View Town Council has included Vivian Bean, Toni Braddy, Brad Cook, Nancy Ray and Janet Smith. Shajuana Dennard is chief of the Lake View Police Department, having succeeded Eddie Frederick.

In August 2020 then Mayor Paul Calhoun pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor ethics violation in which he cast a vote on a town policy requiring him to reimburse certain travel expenses. As part of his plea he resigned from office and agreed not to run in the next municipal election, scheduled for August 25. Mayor pro tempore Nancy Ray succeeded him as interim mayor.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles, of which, 1.6 square miles is land and 0.2 square miles is water.

Six lots in the Oakwood Trace Acres subdivision were annexed into Lake View in 2023.

Demographics

At the 2010 census there were 1,943 people, 676 households, and 564 families in the town. The population density was 1,214.4 people per square mile. There were 700 housing units at an average density of 437.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 94% White and 4% Black or African American. Of the 676 households 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.2% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% were non-families. 13.2% of households were one person and 3.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.16.

The age distribution was 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% 65 or older. The median age was 35.9 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median household income was $77,750 and the median family income was $81,250. Males had a median income of $53,646 versus $37,109 for females. The per capita income for the town was $28,334. About 0% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0% of those under age 18 and 0% of those age 65 or over.
