This is a List of homicides in 2022, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 292 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

Bibb County

  1. June 30: Bradley Johnson, 39, a Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during a pursuit of a stolen vehicle. He was shot in the head while chasing a Toyota Corolla being driven by Austin Patrick Hall. Another deputy, Chris Poole, was suffered serious injury. Hall was arrested and charged with capital murder. The Alabama State Highway 25 overpass over U.S. Highway 82 in Centreville and the Exit 100 bridge on Interstate 20 were named in his memory. A "Deputy Brad Johnson Act", also passed in 2023, set new limits on the accrual of "correctional incentive time" earned by state prisoners toward potential early release. (report)

Blount County

  1. September 5: An unnamed male, 58, was shot to death and a woman injured in a domestic shooting on the 300 block of Valley Drive in Oneonta. Norman Wayne Griffin was taken into custody in Cordova and charged with murder. (report)
  2. September 20: Ian Wiesman, 2, was found dead in a car parked outside the Kids Campus daycare on Alabama State Highway 75 in Oneonta. His grandfather, William Wiesman, was charged with reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. (report)
  3. October 22: Tammy Bailey, 52, was stabbed to death and dismembered at her home on Bailey Drive in Springville. Her boyfriend, Justin Fields, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. He surrendered and confessed to his actions. (report)
  4. December 8: Stephen Bentley, 34, was shot to death by law enforcement officers at a home at 150 Dogwood Lane near Hayden. Hayden Police and Blount County Sheriff's Department were present at the scene. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the circumstances of the shooting. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. January 11: Taevion Fife, 15, died from a gunshot wound suffered during an argument at the intersection of 13th Street and Christopher Avenue in Anniston. Nathan Higgins was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. January 16: An unnamed woman, 36, died at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center from a gunshot wound suffered at the PURE Sports Bar & Grill at 1800 South Quintard Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  3. February 14: Alexander Kade Lanier, 26, was killed in a shootout with Oxford Police following a carjacking at the Waffle House at 65 Jimmy Hinton Drive and a chase on I-20 westbound which culminated at Alabama State Highway 21 near the Anniston Regional Airport. (report)
  4. August 21: Trenton Medders, 25, was shot to death in a house on the 1500 block of Rochester Road Southwest in Jacksonville. Justin Racca was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)
  5. September 21: James D. Livingston, 54, died at UAB Hospital from stab wounds suffered in an altercation on the 4000 block of Bynum Leatherwood Road in Anniston. Stanley L. McCrelles was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  6. December 18: Jacoby D. White, 24, was shot to death at a home on the 4500 block of Sprague Avenue in Anniston. Jada Cook was arrested at the scene and charged with domestic violence-murder. (report)
  7. December 31: An unnamed 13-year-old male was shot to death on the 4000 block of Old Piedmont Gadsden Highway in Piedmont. Paul Joshua Baker was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Chilton County

  1. April 11: Dante Gervaise Millner, 38, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered the day before during an argument on the 1200 block of 1st Avenue in Clanton. A suspect has been identified but remains at large. (report)
  2. May 5: The remains of Thomas Lee Creel, 71, were found in a wooded area of Alabama State Highway 145 north of Clanton. Two juveniles, with whom Creel was acquainted, were arrested and charged with murder and first-degree burglary. (report)
  3. September 20: Tyran Lamon Spigner, 49, was found dead alongside another body in his burning home at 2015 Lay Dam Road in Clanton. The deaths were ruled to have been caused by homicide. (report)
  4. September 20: Tiffany Nicole Browning, 33 was found dead in the same incident.
  5. October 26: Bryan Scarbrough, 14, was shot to death at his home on Chilton County Road 28. His older brother, Thomas James Robinson, was apparently playing with the gun that caused his death. He was charged with manslaughter, and also with sexual abuse of a child in a separate case. (report)

Coosa County

Cullman County

  1. June 25: An unnamed 6-month-old girl was found dead inside a parked car in West Point. Her mother, Lauren Peyton Whittle, and another caregiver, Vinton Eugene Rockwell, were arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)

Etowah County

  1. June 9: Robert Tyler White, 32, was shot to death by Gadsden Police Department officers responding to reports that he was trying to enter Walnut Park Elementary School while a summer literacy program was being conducted. During the encounter he reportedly also tried to enter a police vehicle and was shot while attempting to grasp an officer's weapon. White reportedly suffered from mental health issues. (report)
  2. October 28: An unnamed armed male was shot to death by an Etowah County Sheriff's Office investigator during a foot chase near Walker Mountain Road which followed an attempted traffic stop of an ATV on Holliday Circle in the Egypt community. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting with assistance from Jacksonville State University's Center for Applied Forensics. (report)
  3. October 30: Cornell Toney, 61, was shot to death during a break-in at his home on Carolyn Lane in Gadsden's Oakleigh Estates subdivision. Teaontari Jaqua "T.J." Staten and Stephon Antwan Jackson were arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. November 3: An unnamed male, 17, was shot to death during an argument on the 100 block of Park Street in East Gadsden. Marcus Paris Watters was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder. (report)

Fayette County

  1. August 30: Kenneth Spinato, 63, was found shot to death at his home in Fayette. No arrest. (report)

  1. December 3: Wendy Johnson Patellaro, 46, was found shot to death inside the Z Benz Shop at 3708 Veterans Memorial Drive. Amy Stocks was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Bessemer

  1. February 14: Janiyah Simmons, 15, died from a gunshot wound suffered at a house on the 300 block of 30th Street South. The shooting appears to have been accidental, taking place while she and a friend were playing with a handgun. The shooter cooperated with police and is being held pending charges. (report)
  2. March 27: Justin DeNorman Groom, 32, was shot to death in the parking lot outside Plush Bar & Grill at 4000 Bessemer Super Highway. The shooting was apparently part of an ongoing dispute. Larry James Knight Jr was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with murder. (report)
  3. April 21: Javail Lamar Hodges, 30, died at UAB Medical West from gunshot wounds suffered on the 2400 block of Berkley Avenue in the Southside Homes public housing project. The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle. No arrest. (report)
  4. April 28: Johnnae Shy'Ann Fuller, 23, was killed in a drive-by shooting while outside her home on the 1800 block of Berkley Avenue. Three others were injured in an assault thought to have been carried out in retribution for previous violence. Cedric Dewaun Evans Jr was arrested in June and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  5. May 7: Warren Oliver Weatherspoon, 48, was shot to death during an argument at 24th Street and Berkley Avenue. A 17-year-old suspect who fled the scene later turned himself in to police and was charged with murder. (report)
  6. May 8: Kenneth Rechard Clark, 39 was shot to death in a car at the Bessemer Stop N Go convenience store at 2805 Dartmouth Avenue. A teenage girl was wounded. A suspect was taken into custody. (report)
  7. July 24: Ricky Howard Hamrick III, 39, was assaulted and shot to death while at the wheel of his car on the 1300 block of 6th Avenue North. He had had arranged to sell two handguns through Facebook Marketplace. His 8-year-old daughter was in the car with him, but was not wounded by gunfire. His family has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. (report)
  8. August 10: Kimberly Necole Hartsfield, 36, was found shot to death in front of a house on the 2600 block of 6th Avenue North. Tyler Malik Petty was arrested after a police chase and charged with intentional murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. (report)
  9. August 28: Cynthia Anabel Cardenas, 34, was shot to death in her car parked outside her home on the 3300 block of Avenue C. Her boyfriend, Hector Medina-Grajeda, has been charged with capital murder, but remains at large. He was last seen in Lebanon, Tennessee. (report)
  10. September 11: Christopher Lamar Tanks, 29, was shot to death during an exchange of gunfire during a custody exchange for two young children at McNeil Park in the Pipe Shop community. The boyfriend of the children's mother died at UAB Hospital. Their father was critically injured. The father's brother, Jerrius Deontez Hickley, was taken into custody, but the initial charges against him were dismissed due to a clerical error. New capital murder charges were filed and he was arrested again in June 2023 and held without bond. (report)
  11. December 25: Clay Austin Parker, 41, was found stabbed to death in an alley behind the 1700 block of 6th Avenue North Bessemer. Timothy Searcy, a fellow resident of ARC of Bessemer prison re-entry program, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Brighton

  1. May 14: Brandon Dewayne Miller, 35, was found shot to death in a car stopped at the intersection of Main Street and Huntsville Avenue. No arrest. (report)

Center Point

  1. August 4: Antonio Leon Warren, 27, died from gunshot wounds suffered as part of an ongoing dispute with a neighbor on the 2500 block of 2nd Way Northwest. Nathan Lee Sanders was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty by reason of self-defense and was acquitted at trial before Judge Shanta Owens in December 2023. (report)
  2. September 6: Mario Danilo Espinal, 50, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run on Carson Road near 16th Terrace Circle Northwest. No arrest. (report)
  3. October 6: Calvin Maurice Chambers, 23, was shot to death at in an assault from a car at Charter East Apartments. William Ayala Torres was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. November 24: Theodore Alexander Hill, 23, was found shot to death on the 2400 block of 5th Street Northwest. Investigators determined that he and Marvin Arnold had both shot at a vehicle that had passed the house earlier firing shots in the air. Hill was struck by Arnold's fire. Arnold was arrested in December and charged with reckless manslaughter. (report)

Fairfield

  1. January 25: Paul Evans Smith Jr, 18, was found shot to death, and a 23-year-old male injured, on the 4000 block of DeBardeleben Avenue. De'Marco Ra'Shaun Smith (no relation) was arrested in February and charged with capital murder. (report)
  2. October 29: Kernisha Jenay McClinon, 30, was shot to death at the Budgetel Motel Kelco Place during an argument. Cortney Dion Price was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. October 29: Ray B. Dover, 60, was killed in a hit-and-run while riding a bicycle on Grasselli Road. Price, who had hijacked a car in his flight from the earlier shooting, was also charged with Dover's death.
  4. November 19: Anthony Thomas Hudson, 24, was found dead on the 6500 block of Aaron Aronov Drive from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run. No arrest. (report)

Homewood

  1. June 3: Andres James Taylor Johnson, 35, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during an altercation in the parking lot of The Seafood King restaurant at 180 State Farm Parkway in Wildwood. Two suspects fled the scene in a Ryder box truck. Jerry Jewayne Jones was arrested and charged with murder. His companion was not charged. (report)
  2. September 11: Justin Jamond "Jelly Bug" Hendrix, 35, was shot to death in an assault at the ATM outside the Wells Fargo Green Springs Branch at 325 West Valley Avenue, across from the Homewood Police Department. No arrest. (report)
  3. October 29: Eric Steven Kaczmarek, 39, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound to the neck suffered during a dispute inside a car the parking lot of the CVS drug store at 418 West Valley Avenue. Brennon Jabree Dinatale was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

Hoover

  1. January 29: Madison Shea Pilkington, 25, was found beaten to death in her home at The Halston apartments. Cortez Lenarde Warren, her manager at Baumhower's Victory Grille in Vestavia Hills, was involved in a relationship with her which is believed to have been physically abusive. He was identified as a suspect and led police on a chase on I-65 northbound before pulling over. He was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to a charge of murder before Judge Michael Streety in exchange for a 35-year prison sentence. A Fultondale police officer was injured during the pursuit when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle. (report)
  2. August 3: Sophia Nicole Zeigler, 19, was shot to death at the Marathon gas station at 5423 U.S. Highway 280 in Greystone. Skylar Jacquel Dorsey was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  3. October 1: Lauren Anne White, 39, was found dead in an apartment in the 100 building at The Park at Hoover apartments off Lorna Road. Daxton Elliot Keith and An'ton Je'horam Lewis were arrested and charged with capital murder. They were indicted on those charges by a grand jury in August 2023. (report)
  4. October 1: Blakeley Meachelle "Byrd" Nelson, 24, was found in the same apartment.

Hueytown

  1. January 11: Kyler Small, 2, died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. His mother, Krishana Danyell Small, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)
  2. August 9: Erin Michelle Stout, 33, was shot to death in an apparent murder suicide. She was found on the 200 block of Notting Hill Circle. Her ex-husband, Robert Adaryll Stout, 49, was found dead in the yard of a house on the 1400 block of Hueytown Road from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he made a 911 call to confess. (report)
  3. August 10: Joshua Alexander Adams, 22, was pronounced dead at UAB Medical West after being found injured by gunshot at a home on the 100 block of 26th Avenue. Patrick Levell Johnson was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. December 23: Marcus Cornelius Jackson, 38, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered on the 1400 block of Hueytown Road during an apparent domestic argument. Chantal Bahadursingh was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with murder. (report)

Irondale

  1. January 2: McKayla Roberts, 27, was struck and killed while walking on I-20 between the Grants Mill Road and Old Leeds Road exits. The driver of a Dodge Journey believed to have hit her did not stop and is sought. (report)

Leeds

  1. August 18: An unnamed male, 31, was found dead at a home on the 1900 block of Capitol Street. Investigators determined that he died from a fentanyl overdose after consuming marijuana laced with the drug. Jose Ingnacio Medina-Estrada was arrested and charged with murder and other crimes. Two others, Janice Latisha Harris and Dennis Lamont Edward, were arrested at a home in South Roebuck and charged with drug trafficking. Leeds police then raided the home at the Cahaba Estates mobile home park where the victim had purchased the drugs and arrested Juan Jose Medina and Gerardo Martinez-Estrada there. (report)

  1. March 30: Steve'Terris Stubbs, 16, was shot to death and another 14 year-old male was wounded in a car-to-car assault at the intersection of Bessemer Super Highway and Woodward Road. No arrest. (report)
  2. April 27: Dijon Alexander McQueen, 17, was shot to death in an assault on the 600 block of 11th Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  3. June 11: Qra'Vonta Arquise Smith, 22, was shot to death during a domestic argument on the 1300 block of 8th Avenue. No charges have been announced. (report)
  4. October 9: Glenn Antonio King, 34, was found shot to death in the yard of a home on the 900 block of 5th Avenue. No arrest. (report)

Trussville

  1. June 1: Jo Ann Henry Harris, 82, was found dead from strangulation and suffocation at her home on Brookstone Drive after her husband, John B. Harris, called his son to say he planned to kill her and himself. He refused entry to police, later shooting himself in the face before surrendering. He recovered from those injuries and was arrested that month and released for psychiatric treatment at UAB Hospital. He was indicted for murder by a grand jury in December. (report)

Vestavia Hills

  1. June 16: Bart Rainey, 84, was shot to death during a "Boomers' Potluck" dinner at St Stephens Episcopal Church. The shooter, Robert Findlay Smith, was disarmed by another parishioner and taken into custody when police arrived. He pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole by Judge Kandice Pickett. (report)
  2. Sarah Yeager, 75, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in the same incident.
  3. June 17: Jane Pounds, 84, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in the same incident.

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. January 1: Robert Leon Doss, 36, was found dead in a wooded area off Lock 17 Road near Griffis Road west of Oak Grove. His death is being investigated as an apparent homicide. No arrest. (report)
  2. January 8: John Christopher Taylor-Wilson, 20, was found shot to death near the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Porter Road in Maytown. No arrest. (report)
  3. January 15: Ronda Bilbro Early, 73, was killed in a three-vehicle collision on Pinson Valley Parkway near Meadow Craft Road. One of the drivers left the scene and is sought. (report)
  4. February 22: Barry Wardell Gardner, 33, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, was found stabbed to death in an open dormitory area. No suspects or charges have been announced. (report)
  5. March 1: William Eric Jennings, 49, was found dead in his cell from blunt force trauma after an assault by another inmate. No suspects or charges have been announced. (report)
  6. May 5: Raymond Earl Hamilton, 57, was shot to death at his home on the 1700 block of Alliance Road in the Alliance community. His landlord, Paul Edwin Vance, was identified as a suspect. He shot himself as deputies approached his home. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he later died from his injuries. (report)
  7. June 15: Mitchell R. Cosby, 41, serving time for a 2002 Jefferson County murder conviction, was killed in an assault at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating the homicide. Tavaris Dewayne McCartney and Karl Martin were charged with murder. (report)
  8. June 16: Brian Keith Lovoy, 46, was shot to death in an apparent domestic incident at a home on the 5900 block of Coleman Lake Road in McCalla. A person of interest was detained for questioning, but no charges have been announced. (report)
  9. July 17: David Daniel Sloan, 45, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, died from injuries sustained when he was beaten by another inmate in his cell on June 24. He had been treated earlier UAB Hospital but returned to the prison on July 14. No charges have been announced. (report)
  10. July 25: Lacorian Renard Maxwell, 18, was found shot to death on the 6400 block of Kimberly Loop just north of Clay. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with his murder. (report)
  11. July 31: Bernice Owens Hulgan, 67, was found dead from gunshot wounds inside her home on the 5500 block of Myron Clark Road in McCalla. Her husband, Louis "Gabby" Hulgan, founding coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide skeet shooting team, was found dead in the house as well, and is presumed to have perpetrated a murder-suicide (report)
  12. August 2: Thomas Allen Everett, 42, was shot to death on the 5500 block of Myron Clark Road in McCalla. Investigators found no connection between his death and the Hulgans' murder-suicide a few days earlier on the same block. Danial A. Madden was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  13. August 5: Jordan Harley Maxwell, 29, was found shot to death in the driveway of a home on the 1900 block of Spring Lake Court between Old Springville Road and Five Mile Creek. No arrest. (report
  14. August 6: Ayobiyi Abeni Cook, 29, was shot to death in her home on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue in Forestdale. Investigators believe her 12-year-old son accidentally shot her. (report)
  15. August 14: Dandrei Stepfon Freeman, 29, was shot to death during a domestic argument at a home on the 1800 block of Pebble Lake Circle south of Chalkville. His father, Henry Edward Freeman, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  16. September 22: Teddy Eugene Self, 55, was struck and killed by the driver of a pickup truck while checking his mail on the 7000 block of Warrior River Road in Rock Creek. A suspect was taken into custody but has not yet been charged. (report)
  17. October 1: Denarieya Letrex "DL" Smith, 30, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, was stabbed to death by fellow inmates. No arrest. (report)
  18. October 3: Joseph Agee III, 29, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, was stabbed to death by a fellow inmate. No arrest. (report)
  19. October 21: The remains of Zachery Steed Coats, 31, were found buried at a residence at 3716 Raceway Park Road in Mount Olive. William Vaughan McKnight and Christal Elaine Skelton were charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. (report)
  20. November 4: The remains Sebedeo Mendez Nunez, 27, were found in a burning home on the 400 block of Weaver Drive, off of Old Tuscaloosa Highway in an unincorporated area surrounded by Bessemer. No arrest. (report)
  21. November 6: Kendall Jarrod Thornton Jr, 21, was found dead in an overturned bullet-riddled vehicle near the intersection of Pinson Valley Parkway and Cleage Drive. No arrest. (report)
  22. November 14: Kenneth Earl Ray II, 32, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, was stabbed to death by a fellow inmate. No arrest. (report)

Lee County

  1. March 7: Lucas Spinks Jr, 35, died from gunshot wounds suffered in an assault at a home on the 1300 block of Commerce Drive. A woman was injured in the same shooting. The suspected shooter was fatally wounded by return fire. (report)
  2. March 7: An unnamed male, suspected of assaulting Spinks and another person, was found shot to death near the scene. No other suspects are sought.
  3. September 19: An unnamed male, 32, was shot to death at his home on the 1200 block of South College Street. Keyon Black was charged with capital murder but remains at large. (report)

Shelby County

  1. January 19: Sharon Tarwater Whited, 40, was found stabbed and shot to death at her home at 156 Piney Woods Drive. Her boyfriend, John Peyton Scott III was charged with capital murder and captured five days later in St Johns County, Florida. In April Judge Bill Bostick referred the case to a grand jury to consider an indictment and ordered Scott held without bond. (report)
  2. January 19: Chester Tarwater Jr, 75, was found shot to death in the same incident.
  3. February 15: An unnamed male was shot to death at the doorway to a home at 321 Honeysuckle Lane in the Windstone subdivision. The shooting victim is believed to have wounded another man in an apparent domestic stabbing incident and then gone on foot, nude and reportedly in an state of "excited delirium", to other houses in the neighborhood. He was said to have been banging on the door of the house on Honeysuckle Lane before the door was opened, a struggle ensued, and he was shot to death by someone inside the home in what is presumed to have been self defense. Another person present inside that home was an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officer. The Shelby County Major Crime Task Force is investigating. (report)
  4. February 21: Denorrious Darnel Garner, 29, was found dead, and another man fatally wounded, in a one-car collision on Shelby County Road 37 near Verda Green Lane south of Columbiana that followed a chase by Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies. The deputies said they were fired upon from the car, but did not return fire. (report)
  5. February 22: Skyler Austin Wilson, 26, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered in the same incident.
  6. June 22: Dinah Davis Northcutt, 77, was found stabbed to death at her home on the 100 block of Shelby County Road 315 in the Summer Hill community west of Columbiana. Her grandson, Richard Alan Howell, pleaded guilty to murder before Judge Lara Alvis and was sentenced to life in prison. (report)
  7. August 21: Jose Alberto Mandurano Chavez, 47, was shot to death during a dispute over a card game on the 100 block of Asberry Road near Montevallo. Jesus May Garcia was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  8. August 31: Cameron Paul Daffron, 16, was shot to death on the 400 block of Alexander Road near Leeds. Two minor males were arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. A third suspect, Kelvarius Imarion Dickerson, was arrested in mid-September and charged with the same crimes. (report)
  9. September 20: Lashondra Monique Wilder, 42, was found shot to death in her home on Kerry Drive in the Kinsale subdivision in Calera. A 17-year old male suspect was taken into custody in what is presumed to have been a domestic incident. (report)

St Clair County

  1. January 6: Jimmy Wade Rich, 55, was killed in a head-on vehicle collision on Cogswell Road in Pell City. Kelsey Yvonne Crow is alleged to have been driving under the influence and using a cell phone when she crossed the center line and struck Rich's auto. She was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and reckless murder. (report)

  4. February 16: Alton K. Johnson was shot to death by a juvenile during an altercation on the Hearthstone Drive area of Odenville. No arrests announced. (report)
  5. April 3: The remains of Cassie Carli, 37, were found in a shallow grave in barn on property at 7826 Highway 11 in Springville. She had last been heard from before a scheduled meeting with her former boyfriend and father of her child in Navarre, Florida. The child was unharmed. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences was unable to determine Carli's cause of death. The former boyfriend, Marcus Spanevelo, was arrested in Tennessee and initially charged by Santa Rosa County, Florida prosecutors with tampering with evidence and giving false information. Those charges were dismissed as St Clair County officials pursued their own investigation. Spanevelo was subsequently charged with abuse of a corpse. He was indicted on that charge in December. In January 2023 Spanevelo was also indicted on federal kidnapping charges. (report)
  6. May 22: Florence Diane Vance, 51, was shot to death along with her two daughters at their home on Depot Street in Riverside. Her husband, William Huntoon Vance, called former Riverside police chief Rick Oliver to report having done "something terrible". He shot and killed himself after police responded. (report)

  9. May 24: Ralph E. Phillips, 58, was shot to death at a home at 7365 Old Acton Road in Moody. His husband, Myles Hope Phillips, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

September 18: John "Cal" Stutts, 28, was shot to death in an armed confrontation with law enforcement officers following an extended chase which began with a carjacking at the Love's Travel Stop at I-59 Exit 174 in Steele, and ended in the parking lot of Taco Bell at 64 Springville Station in Springville.   11. November 6: Victoria Malet, 54, was found shot to death off of Cooks Springs Road in Pell City. No arrest. (report)
  12. November 20: Rebekah Poe, 46, died from injuries suffered when she was struck by a dark-colored Dodge Charger near the intersection of Funderburg Lane and Skyline Trail in Pell City. Investigators believe she confronted suspects who had been breaking into vehicles and was intentionally run over. Two suspects were taken into custody in February 2024. (report)

  1. January 11: Tae'vion Fife, 15, was shot to death in an argument that arose over a gun sale on the 1200 block of Christine Avenue in Anniston. Nathan A. Higgins was arrested and charged with murder. He was released on bond, but it was revoked after he was arrested again in September and charged with strangling his mother. (report)
  2. February 11: Sri Satya Krishna Chitturi, 27, was shot to death during a robbery at the Crown service station at 3694 Old Birmingham Highway (Talladega County Road 511), at the intersection of Skyview Road in the Town of Oak Grove, just northwest of Sylacauga. No arrest. (report)
  3. March 3: Nancy Elaine Arnold, 40, was found dead on Cemetery Lane in Childersburg. No arrest. (report)
  4. April 2: Jeremiah Curry, 14, was shot to death in the Knoxville Homes community in Talladega. A $1,000 reward has been offered for information in the case. No arrest. (report)
  5. April 30: Spencer Lamar Reeves, 25, died at Citizens Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered during a drive-by assault on East Sloan Avenue in Talladega. Keontae Threatt and Shu'n'tavis Twyman have been identified as suspects. Threatt was arrested and charged with capital murder. Twyman remains at large. (report)
  6. July 1: Nartavius Cortez Fluker-Smith, 22, died at Coosa Valley Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered in an assault near his home on South Main Avenue in Sylacauga. Sheridan Rashon Clark was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  7. July 28: Kelis Cook, 19, was killed in a car, and another man injured by gunfire on the 400 block of Brignoli Street in Talladega. No arrest. (report)
  8. July 29: Ja'Drean Mondrell Dykes, 20, was shot to death at the Drew Court public housing community in Sylacauga. No arrest. A $1,000 reward has been offered for information. (report)
  9. July 31: Johnny Lee Marbury, 33, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during an altercation which broke out during a large gathering at the Sadie Lee Homes public housing project in Childersburg. No arrest. (report)
  10. September 18: De'Anthony Latrell "Zip" Elston, was found shot to death in a car on Wood Street in Sylacauga. No arrest. (report)
  11. September 25: Dontez Lamar Garrett, 22, was killed in a shootout on the 100 block of Seminole Avenue in Sylacauga. Another male was wounded. No arrest. A $1,000 has been offered for information leading to the identity or arrest of a suspect in the shooting. (report)
  12. November 12: Don Andre Sanders Jr, 26, died at Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega from gunshot wounds suffered on the 300 block of Swain Lane in Alpine. No arrest. (report)
  13. November 24: James Edward Wade, 71, was found shot to death at his home on the 1500 block of Shocco Road in Talladega. No arrest. (report)
  14. December 16: Douglas Charles Jude, 81, died at UAB Hospital. He was found severely injured after a vehicle collision on West 4th Street near Marble City cemetery in Sylacauga on November 26. Investigators learned he had been assaulted at his home before attempting to drive to the hospital. Christopher Adam Grantham was arrested while driving Jude's 2010 Honda Accord in Lynn Haven, Florida. He was charged with murder and first-degree theft. (report)

  1. December 29: Elijah Tarez Lewis, 18, died from wounds suffered in a shooting on Thomas Street in Alexander City. Dental "Lil Man" Davis was arrested in July 2023 and charged with murder. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. February 8: Dennis Melton, 27, was struck by a car while walking alongside I-59/20, close to mile marker 76 in southwestern Tuscaloosa. Witnesses reported to investigators that the incident appeared to have been intentional. Angelica Quintana was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. March 17: Tacara Moton, 27, was found dead at a home on the 3500 block of McKenzie Avenue in Tuscaloosa. Her boyfriend, Jonathan Lawayne Peeble, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)
  3. March 28: Lamont LaKeith Cameron, 26, was killed and a 25-year-old female wounded in a car-to-car assault on the 3000 block of 27th Street. A 4-year-old in the car was uninjured. No arrest. (report)
  4. May 11: Eric Shane Hatter, 42, was one of two people found dead in a burned mobile home on the 1900 block of Garber Street in the Holt community. No arrest. (report)
  5. May 11: Hatter's girlfriend was found dead in the same burned home.
  6. August 4: Tiffiney Nicole Barger, 41, was killed in a head-on vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 43 about 11 miles north of Northport. Zoe Raine Moore, the driver of the other car who was also injured, was determined to have been under the influence of marijuana and to have been using her phone at the time of the collision. August 5: Charlotte Leigh Wallin, 45, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered when she was struck and killed while walking on the sidewalk along the southbound lanes of Jack Warner Parkway, between Hackberry Lane and Marrs Spring Road. DaQuisha Meshunda Frank was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)
  8. November 12: The remains of Barry Sartain, 61, were found in an outbuilding at his home on the 11000 block of Fork Lane in Cottondale. His roommate, Daniel Scott Raines, admitted to having killed Sartain during an altercation. He was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  9. November 17: An unnamed male, 5 months old, died at Children's of Alabama from injuries consistent with abuse. His father, Zoe Floyd Michael Jr, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  10. December 31: Deshawn Tanthony Eatmon, 26, was shot to death at Brookhaven Apartments on James I. Harris Jr Parkway East in Tuscaloosa. Michael Terrell Charles was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  11. December 31: An unnamed male, 16, was shot to death during a large gathering at the Hodo Haven Apartments in the 700 block of 33rd Street in Tuscaloosa. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

  1. May 26: An unnamed person was one of two found shot to death after a reported home invasion near 4th Avenue Northeast and Marlin Jordan Road in Carbon Hill. Another person was injured. No arrest.
  2. May 26: A second person was killed in the same incident.
  3. June 5: Misty Lynn Freeman Clark was found dead on the side of the road on the 1900 block of Sellers Road in Dora. Allean Lee Holiday was arrested as a person of interest in her death and was held on charges relating to possession of drug paraphernalia. (report)
  4. September 10: Roger Wolfe, 61, was killed during a domestic argument on Fall City Road in Jasper. His son-in-law, Jamie Lee Vines, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
