2022 Birmingham homicides

From Bhamwiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2022. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

153 homicides were reported for the year, surpassing the recent record high of 148 in 1992. Based on the 2022 census estimate of 196,910 population, that represents a homicide rate of 77.7 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 143 homicides in 2021. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014.

The city averaged 12.8 homicides per month, or one every 2.4 days. There were 11 incidents in January, 15 in February, 8 in March, 15 in April, 11 in May, 11 in June, 18 in July, 13 in August, 15 in September, 13 in October, 9 in November and 12 in December. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 14-day span between January 14–28. 30 deaths were reported on Sundays, 21 on Mondays, 18 on Tuesdays, 14 on Wednesdays, 19 on Thursdays, 18 on Fridays, and 30 on Saturdays.

One death came at the hands of police, and 9 other reported homicides were ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors. In one case murder charges were filed against an accomplice of the homicide victim rather than the shooter. Another case was investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office rather than Birmingham police. With the exception of those, the department acknowledges 135 chargeable homicides, 3 of which were charged as manslaughter. Suspects have been identified in 69 cases, arrested in 67 and charged in 58.

Convictions have been obtained in 3 cases, one in which the charge was reduced to provocation manslaughter, one by plea to misdemeanor criminally-negligent homicide, and one by plea to reckless murder.

131 deaths resulted from shootings, 4 from blunt-force trauma, 7 from reckless driving, and 8 from unannounced causes. 25 incidents occurred outside at apartment complexes, 40 at private homes, 7 at businesses, 5 at private clubs, 1 outside a correctional facility, 1 in a cemetery, 3 at private parking lots, and 65 on the streets. 65 deaths were reported in the West Precinct, 34 in the East Precinct, 21 in the South Precinct and 30 in the North Precinct.

51 deaths came during altercations, at least 17 of which were apparently domestic in nature. 45 appeared to have been targeted assaults; 3 took place during robberies; 3 were carried out in self-defense; 1 was a police shooting; 7 were the result of reckless driving, and 2 came from stray bullets. A motive in 37 other deaths has not been publicized. At least some of the targeted assaults may have involved associates of the H2K and 420 street gangs engaged in a cycle of retaliation.

131 victims were male and 22 were female.

In April, the Jefferson County Department of Health announced funding for a Hospital Violence Intervention Program to provide resources to victims of violent crime who are at risk of continued violence.

Multiple homicides related to street racing and exhibition driving led Mayor Randall Woodfin to promise stricter enforcement, additional physical deterrents, and to lobby for stronger laws against organized reckless driving.

In August, Al.com and The Birmingham Times announced a collaboration to report more comprehensively on factors fueling violence and giving voice to victims, community leaders, law enforcement, mental health experts and activists with views on the issue.

During a violent Labor Day weekend, Woodfin called out the names of five street gangs believed to bear responsibility for some of the shootings–H2K, 6500 Blys, 420, TMSG and CPMG– and asked friends and family of gang members to plead for truce.

Clergy Concerned for the Community held a three-night revival from September 68 at Olivet Monumental Baptist Church to call churches toward leadership in reducing violence.

In December Faith In Action held its annual "Lament and Hope Memorial Ride" to remember the lives lost to gun violence and join in hope for preventing future losses.

Alison Dearing of One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center has observed that many homicides resulted from escalation of other domestic violence crimes and that 69% of homicide offenders had a domestic violence history, suggesting that more impactful intervention could reduce homicide counts.

U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr have advocated for faster and more effective interventions against reported domestic violence cases as an effective means of reducing homicides. They reported that 71% of Jefferson County’s homicide offenders in 2022 had a prior history of domestic violence, and also noted that Jefferson County alone requires victims to appear in person to secure judicial orders of protection, many of which are never successfully served. Carr's office created a "Domestic Violence High-Risk Team" in 2022 to identify patterns of repeated or escalating abuse.

The Refuge In Troubled Times Community Development Corporation, led by Brenda Paige Ward, hosts an annual vigil at Kelly Ingram Park to remember victims of violence along with victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ward lost two brothers and a grandson to violence. Speakers at the vigil included Sheila Tyson, Mark Pettway, Danny Carr, Don Thomas, and members of What About Us.
