Grayson Valley

Grayson Valley is an unincorporated community encompassing 2.29 square miles directly northeast of Birmingham in Jefferson County. It adjoins Trussville to the southeast and Clay to the northwest and is traversed by Chalkville Road. Grayson Valley is located at 33°38′55″N, 86°38′11″W. The area is primarily residential with commercial establishments lining Chalkville Mountain Road. It is most well known in the region as the home of the Grayson Valley Country Club.


Demographics

As of the 2000 Census, there were 5,447 people, 2,155 households, and 1,579 families residing in the community. The population density was 918.4/km² (2,374.2/mi²). There were 2,210 housing units at an average density of 372.6/km² (963.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 94.57% White, 3.56% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,155 households out of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the community the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the community was $50,691, and the median income for a family was $54,301. Males had a median income of $39,680 versus $29,093 for females. The per capita income for the community was $22,840. About 2.5% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

Schools

Grayson Valley is zoned for the Jefferson County School System's schools feeding into Clay-Chalkville High School. Prior to the creation of the Trussville City Schools system, residents living north of Chalkville Mountain Road between Trussville and Old Springville Road were zoned for Hewitt-Trussville High School and its feeder schools. Until 2020, upon the completion of Bryant Park Elementary School, the students previouosly zoned for Hewitt-Trussville were zoned to schools feeding into Pinson Valley High School.
