Sigurd Bryan

Sigurd Bryan (born January 14, 1924 in Barbour County, died March 28, 2020) was a Baptist minister and professor in the Department of Religion and Philosophy in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences at Samford University from 1956 to 2002.

He first came to Birmingham as a ministerial student at Howard College (later Samford) where he majored in history. After graduating he attended seminary at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he also earned his doctorate. He returned to his alma mater in 1956, the last year the campus was located in East Lake. While at Samford he taught and preached widely throughout Alabama, including as part of the Samford University Extension program of evening classes.

In 1965 he married Sara Pate, they had one daughter Catherine. He was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church in Bluff Park.

He taught primarily in areas of Old Testament and Christian Doctrine. At the time of his retirement he was the S. Louis and Ann W. Armstrong Professor of Religion and chair of the Department of Religion. He also served as department chair from 1980-1987. After retirement he continued to direct the Samford Sunday preaching program.

A memorial service was initially scheduled March 21, 2020 but was cancelled due to COVID-19. Later a memorial service was held at Shades Crest on June 25, 2023.
