The Birmingham City Council consists of nine members representing nine individual districts and facing elections every four years. The current makeup of the council, following October 2005 elections, is:
- Council District 1 (Joel Montgomery, Councilor)
- Council District 2 (Carol Reynolds, Councilor)
- Council District 3 (Valerie A. Abbott, Councilor)
- Council District 4 (Maxine Parker, Councilor)
- Council District 5 (William A. Bell, Councilor)
- Council District 6 (Carole Smitherman, Councilor and President)
- Council District 7 (Miriam Witherspoon, Councilor and President Pro-Tem)
- Council District 8 (Steven Hoyt, Councilor)
- Council District 9 (Roderick Royal, Councilor)
