Aldi

Aldi is a German chain of discount grocery stores that entered the Birmingham market with the opening of its Bessemer store on Academy Drive in January 2007. The chain was founded in Essen, Germany in 1948, and saw its first U.S. store open in Iowa in 1976. The chain is noted for carrying a limited selection of various food and home products in addition to having innovative means to cut costs to the consumer such as charging for bags and having a refundable cart rental charge of $.25.

• 5960 Chalkville Mountain Road, Trussville (opened in summer 2007)
• 428 Green Springs Highway, Homewood (opened in late summer 2007)
• 520 Gene Reed Road, Roebuck (opened May 1, 2008)

Future locations

• U.S. Highway 31 and Valleydale Road, Pelham
• Crestwood Boulevard, on an outparcel at Century Plaza (scheduled to open in May 2009)
