Backbone Mountain is a low intermittent ridge paralleling Shoal Creek near the Hardwick community in St Clair County (map). Along with Shoal Creek Mountain and Beaver Creek Mountain it divides the county into two parts. The difficulty faced by people living in the southern part of the county traveling to Ashville led to the creation of a second county seat in Pell City in 1907.

Another Backbone Mountain can be found in the Talladega National Forest near the community of Glades (map).
