Better Basics is a non-profit organization that promotes child literacy. It was founded in 1993 by attorney John Glasser in East Lake. Catherine Goudreau is the executive director. The organization's offices are located in the University Park Business Center at 1231 2nd Avenue South.
Better Basics provides a variety of enrichment programs for schools and community organizations. Since 2014 Better Basics has partnered with Dolly Parton's "Imagination Library" to equip children with reading materials. The program, which has expanded to cover all of Jefferson County and Walker County reported having reached 22,000 students from more than 20 schools and to have distributed more than 70,000 books in 2021–2022.
