The Desert Island Supply Co. (D.I.S.C.O.) is a non-profit that conducts creative writing programs for youth. It was founded in 2010 by author and lecturer Chip Brantley and his wife, poet and educator Elizabeth Hughey. They were inspired by similar programs in San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas. Brian Connell took over as executive director in 2018.
The group's permanent workshop space and retail shop opened in November 2012 in Woodlawn's Woodrow Hall at 5500 1st Avenue North. The space was planned and decorated by Jane Brock.
In addition to its free after-school workshops and summer camps open to all youth, DISCO operates special grant-funded programs for Birmingham City Schools students at Avondale Elementary School, Oliver Elementary School, Putnam Middle School and Woodlawn High School. The groups also hosts concerts, public readings and other programs.
