Evan Zeiger Jr

H. Evan Zeiger, Jr (born c. 1949; died March 6, 2010 near Miramar Beach, Florida) was a Norwood Clinic neurosurgeon and amateur pilot.

Zeiger was the son of Evan Zeiger, Sr, a long-time financial affairs officer and one-time athletic director at Samford University. Evan Jr earned his undergraduate degree at Samford in 1971 and completed his M.D. at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1974 with an internship at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in 1975 and residencies in general surgery at Carraway and in neurosurgery at Washington University School of Medicine's Barnes Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Western Ontario in 1981. He was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1984.

Zeiger joined the Norwood Clinic in 1987 and teamed up with fellow neurosurgeon Robert Craddock. They moved with the clinic from Carraway to Brookwood Hospital in 2008. He was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Medical Association of Alabama, the Southern Medical Association, the Neurological Society of Alabama, the Birmingham Academy of Medicine, and the Birmingham Surgical Society.

Zeiger owned and flew an SNJ-6 "Texan", a single-engine propeller plane used to train Army Air Corps pilots. He and his wife, Peggy Shook Zeiger were flying in formation with other aviators over the Gulf of Mexico when his plane dropped into 50-foot-deep water approximately a mile from shore. Divers later found them dead inside the wreckage.
