Five Points Music Hall
The 5 Points Music Hall (formerly the Five Points South Music Hall) is a bar and concert venue located in a former Piggly-Wiggly grocery store at 1016 20th Street South near Five Points South.
The club was first opened in 1994 by Tony Ruffino of New Era Promotions, in hopes of recapturing some of the caliber of acts that New Era had attracted to Brothers Music Hall in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The club was managed by Gary Mitchell and Danny Higginbotham. The 999-seat hall was opened in a former Piggly Wiggly grocery store. In the front part of the building, the hall featured a smaller, 250-seat area open Monday through Saturday. A retractable wall opened at the back for larger shows. The smaller room was used for local live music. A kitchen in the smaller room served food during all shows.
The Music Hall closed in 2003. Banana Joe's later operated out of the same building until it closed in 2008 amid fallout from a double homicide perpetrated by an underage patron in the club's parking area.
In July 2009 Jeff Brugmanns, Kelly Nagy and Chip Matthews opened a new Five Points Music Hall, aiming to bring back the type of touring acts that set the club apart in its heyday while adding a restaurant and a Sunday gospel brunch. According to Manns a sports grill and oyster bar, open 7 days a week, will use the 20th Steet entrance while the music hall entrance will only be used for concerts. The club held a grand opening on Wednesday July 29 and scheduled the Velcro Pygmies, Mel and the Party Hats and Vanilla Ice to play during the first weekend.
