Garden City is a Class 8 town of 564 in Blount and Cullman counties. Its name was derived from Johann Cullmann's labeling the area "the garden center of the world" in 1876. A post office was established for the settlement in 1898 and it was incorporated in 1911.

The current mayor is Harden Davis.


Geography

Garden City is located at 34°0'33.160" North, 86°44'53.372" West, on the banks of the Mulberry Fork of the Warrior River.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles, all of it land.

Demographics

The population density was 247.1 people per square mile. There were 255 housing units at an average density of 111.7/sq mi. The racial makeup of the town was 99% White.

There were 238 households out of which 26% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32% were non-families. 29% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 22% under the age of 18, 10% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 17% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,000, and the median income for a family was $37,031. Males had a median income of $25,583 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,793. About 7.4% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
