Henry Irby III (born c. 1962 in Birmingham) is a former deputy chief and interim chief of the Birmingham Police Department, and currently serves as interim chief of the Brookside Police Department.
Irby graduated from Parker High School in 1980 and earned his bachelor of science in criminal justice from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee. He enrolled in the Birmingham Police Academy in 1985 and spent his entire 32-year career with the department. He worked as a patrol officer, a training instructor and in support services before joining the Investigative Operations Bureau. From there he moved to Field Operations. In 2001 Irby was promoted to Public Information Officer.
Irby attended a program for law enforcement executives at the FBI National Academy in Quantico in 2007. In 2009 he was promoted to captain and assigned to serve as commander of the West Precinct. A year later he transferred to the same role in the North Precinct. He served one term as president of the Alabama Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
In 2011 Chief A. C. Roper made him his executive assistant before promoting him to deputy chief in 2013. After Roper stepped down, new mayor Randall Woodfin appointed Orlando Wilson as interim chief. Wilson stepped down in April 2018 and Woodfin tapped Irby to succeed him as interim chief. Irby was a finalist for the chief position, but was passed over in favor of Patrick Smith later that month. In June 2018 Irby announced his retirement from the department.
