Herschell Hamilton Jr is the president of Formation Methods, a real-estate firm, developer and construction company. He is also a member of the Birmingham Water Works Board.

Hamilton is the son of Herschell Hamilton Sr, personal physician to Fred Shuttlesworth in the 1950s and 60s and a financial supporter of the Civil Rights Movement.

Hamilton was a member of the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center board of directors in the 1980s and served as chief administrative assistant to mayor Richard Arrington Jr in the late 1990s. He continued to work with former city attorney Donald Watkins as vice president of the Masada Resource Group.
