Howard Phillips

Howard Mitchell Phillips, Jr was the eighth president of Alabama College at Montevallo, in office from 1957 to 1963; and the sixth President of Birmingham-Southern College, serving until 1968.

Phillips earned his bachelor of science and master of arts at Wake Forest College and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He was a professor of biology and dean of the graduate school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia before taking the reigns in Montevallo. While there he oversaw construction of Fuller Hall in 1961 (demolished in 2010).

After coming to Birmingham-Southern, Phillips focused on improving facilities, increasing student recruiting efforts, and expanding the role of individual initiative in student development.
