The I-22 I-65 interchange is a massive 14-bridge, 4-level stack interchange connecting Interstate 22 to Interstate 65 about 4 miles north of Malfunction Junction, where I-65 connects with I-20/59.
I-65 will be widened to eight lanes through the interchange, with additional merging lanes from newly-built surface streets. Daniel Payne Drive will be linked to I-65 North and 41st Street North will have an on-ramp to I-22 West.
Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta, Georgia submitted the winning bid of $168.6 million began the first of four phases of work on August 1, 2010, with a scheduled completion date for all phases before October 15, 2014. The project suffered numerous delays, however, due to weather and disputes between the contractor and ALDOT. Archer Western was assessed $2,000 per day (approximately $1.2 million) in liquidated damages for late completion beginning on October 22, 2014 until the final completion date on June 20, 2016.
A second project, to extend I-22 another 3,000 feet beyond the major interchange to a smaller terminus at U. S. Highway 31 is still in the planning stages.
