The Irondale Occupational Tax is a 1.0% tax on wages for all workers in the city of Irondale, passed by a 3-0 vote of the Irondale City Council on May 29, 2018. The vote followed an unsuccessful April 10 referendum to raise property taxes. Both measures were proposed in order to meet a shortfall in the city's budget, largely caused by the closure of the Sam's Club warehouse store, which had alone accounted for about $1.4 million in annual sales tax revenues, property taxes and business license fees.

Council members Steve Marino, David Spivey and Terry Bearden all voted in favor of the measure. John London and Bobby Joe Wilson were not present for the vote.

As enacted, the tax would apply to workers at religious institutions, including Church of the Highlands and EWTN which are otherwise exempt from taxation.
