Colonel John Talieferro Terry (born August 31, 1831 in Chester, South Carolina - died ) was an attorney for the Elyton Land Company and a central figure in the founding of Birmingham City Schools. He bought all $3,000 worth of bonds in the city's first issue, earmarked for schools and loaned additional funds when the construction of the first Free School went over budget.
The site of Terry's home on 7th Avenue North became the home of the first Birmingham High School (now Phillips High School).
Terry is interred at Oak Hill Cemetery.
