Hayes played seven games as a pitcher for the Washington Senators during the [[1935]] season.
Hayes played for the [[Edgewater]] mine camp in Birmingham's [[Industrial League]]. He made his minor league debut with the [[1934]] Atlanta Crackers of the [[Southern League]], going 6-5 with a 4.30 earned run average in 20 appearances. In [[1935]] he pitched for the Chattanooga Lookouts, and went 5-9 with a 4.43 ERA in 24 games.
 
Hayes made his Major League debut on [[July 13]], [[1935]] with the American League's Washington Senators. He appeared in seven games, but was cut after allowing 7 earned runs in 3 innings against Detroit on [[August 14]].
 
Hayes returned to the minor leagues in [[1938]], pitching for the Tigers of the South Atlantic League. In [[1939]] he split the season between the South Atlantic League Macon Peaches and the Piedmont League's Portsmouth (Virginia) Cubs. He wrapped up his professional career with the Class D Florida State League's Sanford Seminoles in [[1940]].
 
Hayes died in [[1993]] and is buried at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge, Georgia.

James Millard "Whitey" Hayes (born February 25, 1912 in Montevallo; died November 27, 1993 in Decatur, Georgia) was a professional baseball pitcher.

Hayes played for the Edgewater mine camp in Birmingham's Industrial League.
