Philip Williams

Philip C. Williams (born 1952) was the 14th president of the University of Montevallo, serving from 2006 to 2010.

Williams grew up in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He earned his bachelor's in history from the University of North Carolina and a juris doctorate from Columbia University in New York. After spending time as a corporate attorney, including a stint as administrative vice president and counsel for Sea World, he went back to school in 1994. He completed both a masters and Ph.D in public health at UNC.

Williams, who speaks Mandarin Chinese, has taught courses in public health in China. He joined the faculty of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina and rose to the position of assistant vice president of academic affairs before moving to Methodist College in 2003.

From 1987 through 1991, Williams wrote a series of murder mysteries. He later co-wrote a series of six children's "Screech Owl Mysteries" with his wife, Sandra G. Garrett. He is also the author of a legal guidebook on small-town law practices.

Williams, the former Vice President of Academic Affairs at Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina, succeeded Robert M. McChesney at Montevallo. He arrived on August 1, 2006 and was officially inaugurated on October 12. With his contract at Montevallo up for an extension vote on September 4, 2009, Williams sent an e-mail to the University's trustees stating that he would resign if he did not have their full support. After a mediation session, Williams offered his resignation effective July 31, 2010.

The Williamses have one son, Grant, and a chihuahua, Zorro.
