Robert Henley

Born in 1843, Robert Henley was the first mayor of Birmingham taking office on December 19, 1871, the day of Birmingham’s incorporation. He was appointed as mayor by then governor Robert B. Lindsay, but would pass away during his term in 1873. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Henley was also responsible for the publishing of the city’s first newspaper, the Birmingham Sun in 1871.
