Thomas W. Smith was the first to serve as Probate Judge for Shelby County, taking office upon completion of the Shelby County Courthouse in Shelbyville in 1820 and leaving to become Clerk of the Circuit Court of that county in 1825.

Smith acquired a 160-acre homestead near Helena in 1824.
