Scot Duncan

Robert Scot Duncan is a biologist, birder, conservationist and author. He is the executive director of Alabama Audubon, and previously a professor of biology at Birmingham-Southern College. He has written two books about Alabama's biodiversity for general audiences.

Scot is the son of conservationists Bob and Lucy Duncan, and grew up in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He earned his bachelor of science in biology at Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida in 1993, and his master of science (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in zoology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Duncan's research has focused on tropical forest restoration in Africa and South America, and on ecological conservation and restoration in the Southern United States.

Duncan came to Birmingham in 2002 to join the faculty at Birmingham-Southern. He chaired the department of biology from 2014 to 2017 and co-chaired the college's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

Duncan has served on the boards of trustees of the Cahaba River Society (2006-2012) and the Nature Conservancy in Alabama. He retired from teaching in 2022 and was named executive director at Alabama Audubon that same year.
