Jabo Waggoner Jr

James T. "Jabo" Waggoner Jr (born January 8, 1937 in Birmingham) is the Majority Leader of the Alabama State Senate.

Waggoner is the son of former Birmingham City Commissioner J. T. Waggoner and an Ensley elementary school teacher. He graduated from Ensley High School and earned his bachelors degree from Birmingham-Southern College and his juris doctorate degree from Birmingham School of Law. Law school inspired him to enter politics.

Waggoner first won election to represent Alabama House District 14 in 1966 and held the seat through 1974. In the 1974 general election he was elected to represent the newly-created Alabama House District 51 and remained in the House through November 1983. In the 1984 general election he ran for the 6th Congressional District of Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives, but was defeated by Ben Erdreich. He was elected to the State Senate, representing the Alabama Senate District 16 in 1990. Waggoner, a Republican, served as Senate Minority Leader from 2002 to 2010, and became Senate Majority Leader after the 2010 general election. Waggoner also chairs the Rules and Confirmations committees and the Committee on Local Legislation No. 2.

Waggoner resides with his wife Marilyn in Vestavia Hills and attend Homewood Church of Christ. They had four children, Scott, Mark, Lyn and J. T. III ("Jay"), who was a standout member of the Auburn Tigers baseball team.
