The Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Commission was established by the Alabama legislature in 2006 to purchase, construct, maintain and operate the proposed Red Mountain Park, a 1,108 acre section of Red Mountain adjoining southwest Birmingham, east Bessemer and north Hoover.

The park property was purchased from U.S. Steel Corporation by the commisison in the summer of 2007. An official kick-off ceremony was slated for October 30, 2007 with plans to open the outdoor recreational site on a limited basis scheduled for 2008.
