Lay Lake is a 12,000 acre lake created in 1914 by Alabama Power's construction of the Lay Dam on Coosa River to create hydro-electric power. Lay Lake lies upstream of the Lay Dam, while Lake Mitchell lies downstream. The lake and dam were named for William Lay, founder of Alabama Power.
The headwaters of Lay Lake lie just south of Wilsonville. The lake itself is situated along the borders of Shelby, Chilton and Coosa Counties. It features 47 nautical miles and 289 miles of shoreline. It has hosted the 1996, 2002 and 2007 Bassmaster Classic fishing tournaments.
