The Komen Birmingham Race for the Cure is part of am international series of 5K road races held annually to raise awareness of and funds for the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation which supports research and outreach efforts in the fight against breast cancer. The North Central Alabama Affiliate of the Komen Foundation sponsors the Birmingham race, which has been run since 1991. 75% of the funds raised by the local event, which totaled over $400,000 in 2005, are used in community programs in the local area. The local presenting sponsor is WBRC/Fox 6.
2006
The 2006 Race for the Cure was held October 14 at Linn Park.
2005
The 2005 race raised over $400,000 and distributed funding to the following programs:
- Patient Navigator Program, UAB Hospital
- Mind Your Mammos, Huntsville Hospital
- Breast Health for African Americans, Captsone College of Nursing, University of Alabama
- DCH Breast Health, DCH Tuscaloosa
- Mammogram Program, Alabama Department of Public Health
- Sowing Seeds of Health, St Vincent's Hospital
- Genetic Counseling, UAB
- Cooper Green ER Access Project, Cooper Green Hospital
- Promoting Screening Mammography through ABCCEDP, Baptist Medical Center Princeton
