2024 Center Street shooting

The 2024 Center Street shooting was a multiple homicide that took place at about 2:45 on the afternoon of February 16, 2024 at a neighborhood car wash on a vacant lot at 830 Center Street North on the corner of 9th Avenue West and across from the Smithfield Court public housing community, in Birmingham's College Hills neighborhood.

At least 39 shots were fired in the drive-by shooting. The victims were all life-long friends who had grown up in the neighborhood. No arrests have been announced.

Victims

  • Talton "T. J." Tait, 36, was the operator of the car wash business. He had four children and was known as the bedrock of his family, and also for helping his neighbors with yard work and free car washes. He resided in the adjacent house, which had been his grandmother's until her death in 2014.
  • Terrell Edwards, 38,
  • Cortez Ray, 32,
  • Kevin McGhee, 38, was Edwards' cousin. He died at UAB Hospital from wounds suffered in the same incident.
