Guillermo Castro
Guillermo Arturo Castro (born 1959 in Guadalajara, Mexico; died July 18, 2011) was a chef and restaurateur.
Castro moved to Birmingham in the late 1980s and worked with the Ruth's Chris steakhouse chain and as a manager at The Pillars.
In 1997 he opened Sol y Luna on 7th Avenue South, featuring Mexican tapas specialties. He later opened Los Angeles, which featured Caribbean and Latin dishes. It later became a private event space before closing entirely in 2008.
In 2004 Castro opened the first location of Cantina in the Martin Biscuit Building at Pepper Place. That concept has since developed into a chain, with locations on Cahaba Valley Road and the Patton Creek Shopping Center, as well as in Montgomery's Alley Station.
Castro died in 2011 after suffering a heart attack. Sol y Luna was subsequently taken over by his brothers, Alex and Jorge.
