R. L. Polk & Co.

R. L. Polk & Co. was a Detroit, Michigan-based compiler and publisher of city directories, business directories, automotive statistics and other annually-issued reference books. It was founded by Ralph L. Polk in 1870 and spread rapidly, with more than 1,000 publications by 1960.

R. L. Polk & Co. published many of its city directories from Richmond, Virginia. The company maintained a Birmingham office in the Martin Building at 2308 4th Avenue North in the 1920s. The company was acquired by IHS Inc. of Englewood, Colorado in 2013. IHS later merged with Markit Ltd of London, England to form IHS Markit.
