Steelhaven Birmingham
Steelhaven Birmingham (previously known as Ascend and The Scholar Birmingham) is a 17-story, 372,999 square-foot residence tower at 1001 20th Street South in Five Points South. The project was developed as a joint venture of Rosemont, Illinois-based Opus Development Company, which first presented it to the Birmingham Design Review Committee in June 2017, along with the McKinney Fund & Company of Plano, Texas.
Myefski Architects of Chicago, Illinois designed the $40 million project for 199 units, ranging from 350 square-foot "junior studios" to 1,248 square-foot 4-bedroom apartments, with an anticipated population of 522 residents. The units, marketed to students at UAB, were to be rented by the room. The building includes a multi-level secure parking deck, a fitness center and spa, study rooms and lounges, and outdoor terraces. The 17th floor houses a swimming pool, club room, coffee bar and outdoor grills. Interiors were designed by Creative License International of Tempe, Arizona.
Though Opus initially expected to begin construction in December 2017, no work began until early 2019. The company acquired the existing building which formerly housed the Emily Shop and The Break, from Frederick Meeks Jr for $2.65 million. Opus announced that the project was back on track on January 8. Rabren General Contractors of Auburn was selected as the builder.
In June 2024 Audubon Capital of Chamblee, Georgia purchased the complex for $27.9 million. By October Audubon had also negotiated with Regions Bank to acquire the Exchange Bank Building opposite 10th Avenue for tenant parking. Their application to the Birmingham Design Review Committee to demolish the 1947 structure and redevelop the site as a gated, private surface parking lot was approved in November of that year.
In January 2025 Audobon announced the building's rebranding as "Steelhaven", and the addition of a pet park and pet spa. TSD Studio of Atlanta, Georgia designed the interior renovations and MOC Consulting designed the rebranding graphics.
