Revision as of 16:02, 2 February 2011

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2011. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

4 homicides have been reported in the city as of February 2, putting Birmingham on pace for 44 in 2011. Based on the 2010 census estimate of 229,151 population, that represents 19.2 homicides per 100,000 population for the year. Birmingham had 63 homicides in 2010, 72 in 2009, 90 in 2008, and a record of 141 in 1992. At this time in 2010 there had been 1 homicide.

Birmingham is averaging 3.7 homicides per month, or one every 8.3 days. There were 4 incidents in January and none so far in February. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 12 days between January 1 and 12. One death was reported on a Sunday, 1 on a Tuesday, 1 on a Wednesday, and 1 on a Saturday.

Of the 4 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 4 cases, apprehended in 3, charged in 3 and convicted in none.

2 of the reported homicides were shootings, 1 resulted from a beating, and 1 from abuse inflicted on a child. 1 incident took place in a vacant lot, 1 at an apartment complex, and 2 at private residences. 1 incident was the result of an apparent robbery, and 1 was the result of a domestic dispute. 3 victims were males and 1 was a female.
