Alabama State Senate District 17 includes the southern two-thirds of Blount County, northern Jefferson County, a swath of St Clair County, and part of northwestern Talladega County. Incorporated areas in the district include Allgood, Ashville, Brookside, Cardiff, Cleveland, Country Line, Fultondale, Gardendale, Hayden, Highland Lake, Kimberly, Locust Fork, Mt Olive, Morris, Nectar, Oneonta, Rosa, Smoke Rise, Trafford and Warrior, along with parts of Altoona, Clay, Graysville, Lincoln, Pinson, Ragland, and Trussville, and a small part of western Oxford.
As of the 2010 census, the district encompasses 157,178 residents; 87% white and 8% black.
