This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 1888. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.
Listing
- December 4: May Hawes, 9, was found floating in East Lake. Her father, Richard Hawes, was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted at trial in May 1889 and hanged in February 1890.
- December 8: Irene Hawes, 4, was found in the lake in Lakeview Park. Her father, Richard Hawes, was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted at trial in May 1889 and hanged in February 1890.
- December 8: Emma Hawes, 28, was found in the lake in Lakeview Park. Her husband, Richard Hawes, was charged with murder. He was convicted at trial in May 1889 and hanged in February 1890.
- December 8: Maurice Throckmorton, postmaster, was killed by Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies firing into a hostile crowd outside the Jefferson County Jail. Sheriff Joseph S. Smith was arrested and charged with murder, but was found not guilty at trial.
