In 1833, Britain retook the Falkland Islands. Andrew Jackson began his second term as President. The British Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act. The city of Chicago was established. Don Carlos disputed 3-year old Isabella II becoming Queen of Spain, beginning the First Carlist War. A spectacular occurrence of the Leonid meteor shower was observed in Alabama, becoming known as "the night the stars fell."

Notable births in 1833 included Chief Justice Melville Fuller, temperance movement leader John St. John, Johannes Brahms, President Benjamin Harrison, and inventor Alfred Nobel.
