To that end, a new library, cafeteria and administrative wing with twelve additional classrooms was built in [[1964]], a two-story science wing added in [[1965]], and a gymnasium completed in [[1966]]. The school was originally constructed in 1957 as a junior high school on a 38-acre site purchased from Sun Valley Acres Inc.. It was named for former Jefferson County school superintendent Eugene Brown Erwin. The school opened with twelve classrooms serving 240 students in grades 7-9.
