Montclair Road was built in 1932 as a section of U.S. Highway 78, until Crestwood Boulevard was extended through Red Mountain at Century Plaza.

Montclair Road connects Pawnee Avenue at the ridge of Red Mountain and skirts the Mountain Brook/Birmingham border northeast to its merging with Crestwood Boulevard at the city limits of Irondale.

MAX Transit Route 44 travels the length of Montclair Road.
