List of Amtrak collisions

This is a List of Amtrak collisions in the Birmingham District. Amtrak currently operates daily service through Birmingham on the Crescent line between New Orleans, Louisiana and New York City.

Collisions

• January 16, 1977: An Amtrak train operated by the L&N Railroad, from Nashville, Tennessee to Wildwood, Florida, derailed due to misaligned track on a curve near New Castle. The locomotive and 12 cars left the track. 68 passengers and 8 railroad personnel were injured, but there were no fatalities. (report)
• November 6, 2015: The driver was killed when his dump truck was struck by a northbound Amtrak train after he drove around the crossing guard arms in Bessemer. No train passengers were injured. (report)
• December 15, 2018: Lloyd Ree Orr Jr, 45 and Kristi Venise Cook, 35, were killed when their car was struck by an Amtrak train after driving around the crossing guard arms at 17th Street Southwest on the border of Oakwood Place and West End Manor. No train passengers were injured. (report)
• June 16, 2022: Roger Lewis Jr, 72, was killed when his vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train after he drove around the crossing guard arms on 17th Street Southwest, on the border of Oakwood Place and West End Manor. (report)
• June 26, 2022: Corey Antonia Jones, 43, was killed when his Ford Fiesta was struck by a northbound Amtrak train after her drove around the crossing guard arms on 31st Street Southwest on the border of the Germania Park and Jones Valley neighborhoods. No train passengers were injured. (report)
• August 7, 2022: Diane Hampton Jones, 73, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered when her car was struck by an Amtrak train at 15th Way Southwest in Arlington-West End. No train passengers were injured. (report)
• October 6, 2022: Marcus Del Lofton 40, was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near 15th Place Southwest and Pearson Avenue Southwest in Arlington-West End. (report)
• November 17, 2022: A van driven by Willie Junior Osborne, 55, was struck by an Amtrak train on the 10 block of Center Place South and was taken to UAB Hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later. (report)
• January 15, 2023: A vehicle driven by Leslie Thomas III, 56, was struck by an Amtrak train at 5th Street (Jefferson County Road 36) in Lipscomb. He was pronounced dead on the scene. (report)
