The Literacy Council of Central Alabama is a non-profit organization which offers tutoring and other programs to teach reading, writing and speaking to adults who are functionally illiterate or who do not speak English in Jefferson, Blount, St Clair, Shelby and Walker Counties. The group's executive director is Katrina Watson, who succeeded Beth Wilder in 2017. Robert Schoenvogel is chair of the board of directors.
The Literacy Council was founded in 1991 as a joint project of United Way of Central Alabama, the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and the Junior League of Birmingham.
The Literacy Council's offices and resource center are located on the ground floor of the Liberty House Lofts at 2301 1st Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The interiors were damaged by a fire that started on the roof of the building on May 22, 2014.
In 2019 the group was awarded a $20,833 grant through the Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition.
