Before he returned to Vestavia Hills as principal, McWaters had served on the faculty at Vestavia Hills for 24 years, first as a volunteer assistant coach and, after 1988 as a full-time science teacher. He was the school's assistant principal from 1999 to 2004 when he left to lead Tarrant High School.
He returned to Vestavia in 2006 to succeed Ann Jones as principal. In his first year he made the decision to remove the Confederate battle flag from the school's seal, to bar it from being displayed in the school, and to prohibit all flagpoles from Thompson Reynolds Stadium.
McWaters, an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church is also known as a vocalist for gospel and contemporary Christian music. In 2006 he organized a recording project that combined several area choirs from the Birmingham Baptist Association for the CD ;Best of Birmingham", the proceeds from which will support tsunami recovery efforts and missionary work in Indonesia.
McWaters' wife, Deborah, is also an accomplished vocalist.
