Steve Ammons

Steve Ammons (born 1968 in Vestavia Hills) is an employment screening consultant and a member of the Jefferson County Commission, representing District 5. He formerly served on the Vestavia Hills City Council.

Ammons is the son of former Jefferson County Finance Director Don Ammons and graduated from Vestavia Hills High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended UAB between 1994 and 1998. He returned to UAB for additional studies in political science and government in 2011–2012.

Ammons founded Bullet Screening Services in 2001, providing criminal background checks and other employee screening services. In January 2018 the business was rebranded as Background IQ.

Ammons defeated David Harwell for the open Place 3 seat on the Vestavia Hills City Council in 2008, and was re-elected without opposition in 2012. During his second term he also served as mayor pro-tem. Ammons was challenged by Robert Du Buys and Paul Head in the 2016 election and dropped out of the race after advancing to a run-off with Head. He cited the cost of holding a run-off election as his motivation for ceding. He was appointed to the Jefferson County Economic and Industrial Development Authority in 2017.

After incumbent David Carrington stepped down to run for Governor of Alabama, Ammons joined his staff as an unpaid intern in preparation for seeking the office himself. He defeated Jack Williams in the 2018 Republican primary for the District 5 seat on the Jefferson County Commission. Ammons was unopposed in the general election.

Ammons is a former member of the Vestavia Hills Rotary Club and a charter member and former president of the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club. He has served on the Vestavia Hills Community Spaces committee, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, and the Hoover Chamber of Commerce. He was an organizer and president of the Vestavia Hills Police Foundation and led efforts to raise funds for the city's Thin Blue Line Memorial, dedicated in 2019.

Ammons has also been a member of the Greater Birmingham Lacrosse Association and Alabama Lacrosse Association. Ammons is a 2020 graduate of Leadership Birmingham. He serves on the Jefferson County Republican Party Executive Committee and is a former vice-president of the Mid-Alabama Republican Club.

Ammons and his wife, Alli McGill, have four children.
