This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2003. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

Birmingham had 85 homicides in 2003 (down from a record of 141 in 1992.)

Listing by date

  1. February 26: Robert Wright, 24, shot in a drive-by shooting at the Curtis Court Apartments at Georgia Road and 59th Street North. Newlyn Lamar Henley was charged with capital murder in July 2007. [1]
  2. April 5: Anthony Earl Frazier, 41, was beaten by a group of juveniles at 33rd Avenue North and 32nd Street in Collegeville and died six days later at UAB Hospital. A 16-year-old was arrested and charged with murder.
  3. April 22: Dearniki Echols, 30, a secretary for Bethel-Ensley Action Task, was shot in her home at Avenue D and 16th Street in Ensley when she interrupted a robbery. Two suspects were taken into custody. (Sullivan-April 24, 2003)
  4. May 14: Keith Blackmon, 16, was shot and killed at an apartment on Crest Green Road off Crestwood Boulevard. Tracy Tashane Ringstaff was charged with manslaughter. His family claimed the shooting was accidental. (report)
  5. August 22: Alfredo Nunes, 22, was shot to death during an attempted robbery on the 1500 block of 50th Street North in the La Quemada community. No arrest. The murder was instrumental in the establishment of the state's first Spanish-language neighborhood watch program.
  6. November 16: Frank Kilow, shot in the parking lot of Hayes High School on 43rd Street North.
  7. November 22: Rodreckus Johnson, 20, shot during a heated argument on the 1800 block of Maple Avenue Southwest on his way to a party in Powderly. His mother, Carolyn Johnson, created Parents Against Violence in 2004. A $10,000 reward has been offered by the Governor's office for information leading to an arrest. [2]
  8. November 30: LeJohn Hinds, 31, was shot to death in a car parked at Dolomite-Westfield Park. The car was later recovered on the 3100 block of Avenue B Ensley. Antrenalla Burts, in custody on an separate attempted murder charge, was charged with capital murder for Hinds' death in August 2010. She implicated Robert Grant III, her co-defendent in the later attempted murder, as Hinds' killer. (report)
  9. December 2: Rex Woods, 43, shot multiple times on sidewalk on the 4500 block of 8th Terrace North, near his Kingston Avenue home.
  10. December 7: Bennie Clifford Banks, Jr, stabbed multiple times and struggled to his Harriman Park home before dying.
  11. December 9: Marcus Waters, 27, shot in car on the 200 block of Lexington Street in Wylam.
  12. December 9: Jer-Michael Barnes, 20, shot in car on the 200 block of Lexington Street in Wylam.
  13. December 10: Stevon Lockett was killed in a drug-related shooting. Kenneth Eugene Billups was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. [3]
  14. December 13: One of four men killed in a single incident for which Kenneth Eugene Billups was convicted and sentenced to death. (report)
  15. December 13: The second of four men killed in the same incident.
  16. December 13: The third of four men killed in the same incident.
  17. December 13: The fourth of four men killed in the same incident.
  18. December 13: Warren Sims, 28, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during a robbery outside a convenience store on the 2400 block of Ensley Avenue. No arrest. (report)
