Since serving on the Birmingham Board of Education she has voted on four charter school applications, including voting in favor of two charter school applications, and in opposition to two applications, despite the recommendations submitted to the board to deny all four applications. Boehm qualified on [[June 28]], [[2021]] to run for re-election in the [[2021 Birmingham municipal election]].
Mary is the daughter of former [[Birmingham City Council]]or [[Alan Drennen]]. She attended the [[Brooke Hill School]] in Birmingham and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in [[1978]]. She taught at [[Creative Montessori School]] and worked with the [[American Red Cross]]. In [[1986]] she began working for the [[Birmingham YWCA]], and helped found its daycare program for homeless children.

Boehm joined the [[Alabama Power Foundation]] as president in [[1989]]. In [[1997]] she left to take the same position with the [[BellSouth Foundation]]. From [[2007]] to [[2017]] she was on the staff of [[A+ Education Partnership]] as director of their A+ College Ready initiative.
On [[January 24]], [[2019]], the Birmingham Board of Education denied charter school applicant [[i3 Academy]]. The board voted 8-1 to accept Superintendent Lisa Herring’s recommendation to deny the application during a special-called meeting. Board member Mary Boehm cast the sole vote against the recommendation. On [[January 27]], [[2020]], Birmingham school board members voted to reject two charter school applications. First the school board voted unanimously to reject the application for Knowledge Unlimited Charter School, also known as Knowledge U. The review committee said the application doesn’t meet requirements necessary for approval under the guidelines of [[Birmingham City Schools]]. The second charter school vote in January was for the [[Magic City Acceptance Academy]] (MCAA). Birmingham’s review committee, which is responsible for reviewing charter school applications, recommended board members deny MCAA’s application due to its lack of detail when it comes to educational program design, an operations plan and financial plan. The board accepted the review committee’s request for denial with a 5-3 vote, with Mary Boehm voting in opposition to the review committee's recommendation.

Mary Boehm

Mary Drennen Boehm (born c. 1953 in Birmingham) is the current District 3 representative on the Birmingham Board of Education.

Mary is the daughter of former Birmingham City Councilor Alan Drennen. She attended the Brooke Hill School in Birmingham and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1978. She taught at Creative Montessori School and worked with the American Red Cross. In 1986 she began working for the Birmingham YWCA, and helped found its daycare program for homeless children.
