Revision as of 09:56, 15 January 2024

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2024. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

5 homicides have been reported in the city as of January 14. Birmingham had 150 homicides in 2023, a record high. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014. At this point in 2023, 6 homicides had been reported.

The city has averaged 11.1 homicides per month, or one every 2.8 days.

None of the reported homicides have been ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors. One death resulted from a crime committed in 2023. With the exception of those cases, the department acknowledges 4 chargeable homicides in 2024. Suspects have been identified in 1 case, arrested in 1 and charged in 1.

At least 4 deaths so far have resulted from shootings and 1 from arson. 4 incidents occurred at private homes and 1 on the streets.

1 homicide took place during a robbery, 1 appeared to be a targeted assault, and 1 resulted from a domestic dispute. The motives for 2 other homicides have not been reported.

4 victims were male and 1 was a female.
