The Alabama Men's Hall of Fame is a state honor established on August 13, 1987 by the Alabama legislature. It is housed at Samford University's Harwell G. Davis Library.
The idea of establishing a men's hall, as a counterpart to the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame established earlier at Judson College, was brought to the Women's Committee of 100 by Mrs Ralph Whitten in 1981. In 1998, Governor Guy Hunt appointed the first members of the board of directors. The board has two representatives of each of the state's congressional districts, five member's of the Women's Committee of 100, and three seats reserved for the Governor, the director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and the president of Samford University.
The hall has "adopted" the membership of the Alabama Hall of Fame, which was active from 1951 to 1965, although some of those individuals have been separately inducted into the Men's Hall of Fame.
The hall honors men born in or closely associated with the state, dead for at least two years, who have made significant positive contributions of statewide, national or international importance in their respective fields. Nominations are accepted each spring, no more than three are chosen by the board, and a formal induction ceremony and luncheon is held in Birmingham each September. Bronze plaques are commissioned recognizing each honoree.
