This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2023. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

3 homicides have been reported in the city as of January 11, putting the city on pace for 96 for the year. Based on the 2021 census estimate of 197,575 population, that represents a homicide rate of 48.6 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 152 homicides in 2022, a record high. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014. At this point in 2022, 7 homicides had been reported.

The city has averaged 8.5 homicides per month, or one every 3.7 days. There were 3 incidents so far in January. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 7 day span between January 4 and 11. No deaths were reported on Sundays, 1 on a Monday, none on Tuesdays, 2 on Wednesdays, none on Thursdays, none on Fridays, and none on Saturdays.

No reported homicides have been ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors. With the exception of those, the department acknowledges 3 chargeable homicides, none of which were charged as manslaughter. Suspects have been identified in 2 cases, arrested in 2 and charged in 1.

3 deaths so far have resulted from shootings, 0 from blunt-force trauma, 0 from reckless driving, and 0 from unannounced causes. 2 incident soccurred outside at apartment complexes, 0 at private homes, 1 at a business, and 0 on the streets. 1 death was reported in the West Precinct, 1 in the East Precinct, 1 in the South Precinct and 0 in the North Precinct.

1 killing arose from a work-related dispute, 1 from a family dispute, and 1 appeared to have been a targeted assault.

3 victims were males and none were female.

  1. January 2: Jamarquis Darionte Weaver, 27, was found shot to death in a vehicle in the parking lot of the East Plaza Apartments at 113 59th Street North in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Another male with him in the vehicle was wounded. No arrest. (report)
  2. January 4: Cortez Dekelvin Ware, 37, was shot to death following a work-related argument at the Elyton Meat Market at 301 Center Street North in Smithfield. Christopher Tyrell Kendricks was identified by witnesses and arrested the same day at Elyton Village. He was charged with murder the next day. (report)
  3. January 11: An unidentified male was found shot to death outside a unit at the Adona Apartments on Aspen Run in Glen Iris. The suspected shooter, the brother of a woman who lives at the complex, was taken into custody at the scene. No charges have been announced. (report)
