The Birmingham Area Music Awards (BAMAs) are an awards program founded in 1998 by Birmingham Weekly to generate interest and recognition for local musicians. The program was suspended after 2002, but returned in 2007.
The awards trophies used up to 2002 were created by Justin Cordes and Chris Toro of Toro-Cordes Iron Art. The 2007 awards were made by Fonde Taylor.
2008 awards
The 2008 BAMAs were awarded on March 20, 2008 at the Carver Theater. Alexa Jones and Ona Watson hosted. Chuck Leavell and Peter Wolf made special appearances, accompanied by the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame All-Stars directed by Ray Reach. Also, there were performances by the 6th Avenue Baptist Church Male Chorus, Thed Weller, Jason Bailey Band, Eric Essix, Ron Dometrovich and Feijoada. The winners were:

- Best Blues: Tim Boykin Band
- Best Country/Bluegrass/Americana: Act of Congress
- Best Hip-Hop/Rap: ShoNuff
- Best R&B/Soul: Oteil and the Peacemakers
